These instructions only apply to SON Faculty and Staff as well as a few other affiliates. In most cases, the SON’s Managed Printers will automatically appear on Windows computers issued by SON IT. If you don’t see the printer you want to use listed or if you are using a Mac or a personal computer, you can follow the instructions below to manually connect to the printer.
If are prompted for credentials while following any of the steps below, be sure to enter your username as WIN\JHED_ID (do not include the @jh.edu). You might also be prompted for credentials again in the future whenever your password changes unless you are using a Dell computer issued by SON IT.

Find your printer’s network name. For Managed Printers, it will be “MP###” (the full formal name will include “SON-” in the beginning) and for personal printers on the network, the name will be something like “PRINT_###”
In the Windows Search box, type \\SON-Print and press Enter. On personal computers, you might have to type the full host name which is \\SON-Print.win.ad.jhu.edu
This should bring up a list of printers. Find yours from Step 1.
Right-click on that printer and choose Connect… and you’re done.
Depending on which type of printer you connected to, it should show up in your list as
“MP### on SON-Print” or “### <printer description> on SON-Print”

IMPORTANT
These instructions for Macs apply to new printers/copiers as they are replaced throughout the school. They will still work for old devices, but the driver you are instructed to use below will be different. Unless you know the correct driver for the old device you connect to, be sure to only create new printers for devices that are listed in the New Devices Already Installed/Replaced table here SON Printer Replacement Project. Additionally, if you create a connection to an old device, you may experience printing issues once the device is replaced.
This process is a little more involved than it is for Windows computers so please be sure to follow each step carefully. For clarity, we are only providing instructions for connecting to our Managed Printers, but the process for personal networked printers should be similar.
Note the name from the label on the printer you want to connect to and its model number. The name will be SON-MP###. The MP### is the portion you want to note.
