MacOS prior to Monterey (12.7.6) is no longer supported.  To check your version, click the Apple icon in the upper-left corner and choose "About This Mac"


  1. Please use the Safari Web Browser

  2. Click on link to download the setup file: (note you must be connected to the VPN or Hopkins WiFi network for this link to work)

  3. Open the Downloads Folder and select the Popup.dmg file you downloaded.

  4. Open the "Popup" drive mounted to your desktop and install the "Popup.pkg"

  5. Select Continue on the "Introduction" and "Read Me" dialogue windows.

  6. Select Install.

  7. Provide Username and Password to local machine (or fingerprint authorization) if prompted.

  8. Install/run this HP Printer Essentials software package

  9. Provide Username and Password to local machine (or fingerprint authorization) if prompted.

  10. Open System Preferences and click on the Printers & Scanners icon. 

  11. Click the Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax... button in the lower Right corner of the window.

  12. If you see an Advanced icon on the toolbar Mac Printer Gears.jpg go to step 15.

  13. Hold down the control key down and click the space next to the Search bar. Then choose Customize Toolbar...

  14. Drag the Advanced icon to the toolbar and close the customization dialog. Note on some Macs, the Advanced icon might be two smaller gears.

  15. Click on the Advanced icon.

  16. In the Type: field, select Pharos Print Server.

  17. In the URL: field, enter popup://son-pharos.win.ad.jhu.edu/SON-StudentPrint

  18. In the Name: field, enter SON Student Printer

  19. In the Use field, choose Select Software…

  20. This brings up a windows where you can select the specific driver for this device.
    Choose HP Color LaserJet Flow X67765

  21. Click the Add button

  22. A screen enabling you to select additional printer features should appear. For SON student printers, toggle Tray 3: ON and set Stapling Unit: to “1 Staple Unit” Do NOT select/enable any other features or your printer may not function properly.

  23. Click OK.

Note for Possible Pharos Popup Errors

If you are not seeing this popup when printing, please follow the below instructions

Option A

  1. Ensure you are connected to the “Hopkins” Wi-Fi. Eduroam or Guestnet will not work

  2. Check for any possible pending updates to your MacBook

  3. Uninstall/Re-install the Pharos Print Package

Option B

  1. Select the Apple Icon at the top left of your MacBook and select System Settings/Preferences

  2. In the search box type “login items

  3. Click “Open at login”

  4. Toggle on the Pharos option
