As of 9/17/2024, all SON managed printers/copiers have been replaced.
* IMPORTANT NOTE * Please see the detail below about making sure the RFID chip is working on your Hopkins badge.
Students can learn more about their copying/printing options at the SON here Student Printing Services
Faculty and Staff using Dell computers managed by SON IT should have the new printers automatically created for them. You should begin using these new printers now and stop using the old printers which should be automatically removed from your machines soon.

It was our intent to automate the process as much as possible for all SON-managed Windows-based computers. Unfortunately, for Mac users and anyone using a personal machine onsite, the process will be more manual. |
...
For Windows users, if a new printer is installed in your area and for some reason is not appearing in your printer list, you should be able to follow the steps below to connect to it.
- Find your printer’s network name. Should be “MP###”
- In the Windows Search box, type \\SON-Print and press Enter
- This should bring up a list of printers. Find the printer from Step 1.
- Right-click on that printer and choose Connect… and you’re done.
- The printer should show up in your list as “MP### on SON-Print”

. Those devices are MP002 (S420A), MP007 (S320), MP008 (N530P) There appears to be a problem when using Google Chrome’s print dialogue that causes the printer to output “garbage” pages with random characters. We have also observed a problem where the page you are trying to print is scaled down only printing on about a quarter of an 8.5”x11” sheet of paper. Oddly, the solution to each of these issues is the exact opposite of the other. If the “garbage” issue occurs, set the value detailed below to 300dpi. If the small scaled down page issue occurs, set the value to 600dpi. To adjust this setting, expand the “More settings” option in Chrome’s print dialogue. Then change the Quality setting accordingly.

title | New devices will use RFID (tapping) in stead of swiping used on old devices |
---|
|
The new devices utilize the “tap” (RFID) capability of our JHMI badges rather than the magnetic stripe used to access the old devices. Logging into the devices with your badge is required for making copies and to release jobs sent using the Secure Print option. Many older JHMI badges have the RFID symbol on the back of the card, but it doesn’t actually work. If this is the case for you, then you will need to go across the street to the Badge Office at the hospital and get a new badge. Just tell them that the RFID feature doesn’t work and they will issue a replacement. The Badge Office is in Room 108. From the Wolfe St entrance make a right after you enter. Very Important – If you obtain a new badge, you will also have a new badge number and you will need to inform both Campus Ops and IT of the new number. You building and copier access will not work until the number is updated in those systems. You can use this link to quickly create and send an email to update us. Just add your JHED ID and new badge#. Q: How do I know whether or not RFID works on my badge? A: Simply place you badge on the reader at any copier. It should beep and log you in to the device. If it does nothing, you will need a new badge. Q: What if I need to make a copy on one of the new devices and have not yet had a chance to update my badge? A: The devices have the ability for you to login with your JHED ID and password. See instructions here Signing Into SON Printers/Copiers |
