These instructions only apply to SON Faculty and Staff as well as a few other affiliates. In most cases, the SON’s Managed Printers will automatically appear on Windows computers issued by SON IT. If you don’t see the printer you want to use listed or if you are using a Mac or a personal computer, you can follow the instructions below to manually connect to the printer.

If are prompted for credentials while following any of the steps below, be sure to enter your username as WIN\JHED_ID(do not include the @jh.edu). You might also be prompted for credentials again in the future whenever your password changes unless you are using a Dell computer issued by SON IT.

Note

IMPORTANTThese instructions for Macs apply to new printers/copiers as they are replaced throughout the school. They will still work for old devices, but the driver you are instructed to use below will be different. Unless you know the correct driver for the old device you connect to, be sure to only create new printers for devices that are listed in the New Devices Already Installed/Replaced table here SON Printer Replacement Project. Additionally, if you create a connection to an old device, you may experience printing issues once the device is replaced.

This process is a little more involved than it is for Windows computers so please be sure to follow each step carefully.

Note the name from the label on the printer you want to connect to and its model number. The name will be SON-MP###. The MP### is the portion you want to note.

  1. Please use the Safari Web Browser

  2. Click this link to download the setup file:

  3. Open the Downloads Folder and select the Popup.dmg file you downloaded.

    • NOTE: If you receive the warning message "App can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer," control-click the application and choose “Open

  4. Open the "Popup" drive mounted to your desktop and install the "Popup.pkg"

  5. Select Continue on the "Introduction" and "Read Me" dialogue windows.

  6. Select Install.

  7. Provide Username and Password to local machine (or fingerprint authorization) if prompted.

  8. Install/run this HP Printer Essentials software package

    NOTE - If you normally print to MP002, MP007 or MP008, you should install this package instead if you want to utilize all the printer capabilities

  9. Provide Username and Password to local machine (or fingerprint authorization) if prompted.

  10. Open System Settings > Preferences and click on the Printers & Scanners icon. 

  11. Click the Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax... button in the lower Right corner of the window.

  12. If you see an Advanced icon on the toolbar , Mac Printer Gears.jpgImage Added go to step 1315.

  13. Hold down the control key down and click the space next to the Search bar. Then choose Customize Toolbar...

  14. Drag the Advanced icon to the toolbar and close the customization dialog. Note on some Macs, the Advanced icon might be two smaller gears.

  15. Click on the Advanced button icon.

  16. In the Type: field, select Windows printer via spoolss Pharos Print Server.

  17. In the URL: field, enter smbpopup://SONson-Printpharos.win.ad.jhu.edu/MP### (where MP### is the ID from step 1)

    Be sure to type it correctly or consider copy and paste to avoid a mistake

    • It is highly recommended that you copy and paste the entire URL above to avoid a typo. If you do, make sure you paste over the existing "popup://" value.

  18. In the Name: field, enter MP### (where MP### is the ID from step 1) SON Print Anywhere

  19. In the Use field, choose Select Software…

  20. This brings up a windows where you can select the specific driver for this device. Enter the model in the filter/search box at the top. Use the table below to select the specific driver listed for this printer.
    Choose HP Color LaserJet Flow X67765
    NOTE - If you normally print to MP002, MP007, or MP008, choose HP Color MFP E877-40-50-60-70

  21. Click the Add button

  22. A screen enabling you to select additional printer features should appear. Refer to the table again below for the features you should select . Do NOT select/enable features not specifically listed or your printer may not function properly. Select the features listed and click that match the printer you will use most often. Note, if you intend to retrieve a job on a different model printer, be sure you do not specify any advanced features such as stapling or choosing a specific paper tray. Results will be unpredictable.

  23. Click OK.
