Please be sure to follow the instructions for your specific MacOS.  To check your version, click the Apple icon in the upper-left corner and choose "About This Mac"

Instructions for MacOS 12.x (Monterey) and higher
  1. Please use the Safari Web Browser
  2. Click on link to download the setup file: Popup.dmg (note you must be connected to the VPN or Hopkins WiFi network for this link to work)
  3. Open the Downloads Folder and select the Popup.dmg file you downloaded.
    • NOTE: If you receive the warning message "App can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer"
      control-click the application and choose “Open”
  4. Open the "Popup" drive mounted to your desktop and install the "Popup.pkg"

  5. Select Continue on the "Introduction" and "Read Me" dialogue windows.

  6. Select Install.

  7. Provide Username and Password to local machine (or fingerprint authorization) if prompted.

  8. Open System Preferences and click on the Printers & Scanners icon. 

  9. Click the Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax... button in the lower Right corner of the window.

  10. If you see an Advanced icon on the toolbar, go to step 13.

  11. Hold down the control key down and click the space next to the Search bar. Then choose Customize Toolbar...

  12. Drag the Advanced icon to the toolbar and close the customization dialog. Note on some Macs, the Advanced icon might be two smaller gears.

  13. Click on the Advanced button.

  14. In the Type: field, select Pharos Print Server.

  15. In the URL: field, enter popup://son-pharos.win.ad.jhu.edu/SON-Student%20SecurePrint

    • It is highly recommended that you copy and paste the entire URL above to avoid a typo. If you do, make sure you paste over the existing "popup://" value.

  16. In the Name: field, enter SON Student Printer

  17. In the Use field, select Generic PostScript Printer

  18. See the sample image below for what your screen should like like.

  19. Click the Add

  20. Be sure to select the Duplex Printing Unit check box on the popup window and click OK

Instructions for MacOS 10.5 and below (for Big Sur or later, see below)

  1. Click on link to download the setup file: Popup-Student.dmg (note you must be connected to the VPN or Hopkins WiFi network for this link to work)

  3. Open the "Popup" drive mounted to your desktop and install the "Popup.pkg"


  4. Select Continue on the "Introduction" and "Read Me" dialogue windows

  5. Select Install

  6. Provide Username and Password to local machine (or fingerprint authorization) if prompted

  7. When the installation completes, click Close

  8. The printer called SON-Student_Printer has now been installed
