IBM SPSS Statistics is a statistical software product that is commonly used in the social sciences, business and nursing sciences. IBM SPSS Statistics 25 is the current version used at the SON. Version upgrades are deployed in the late summer before the fall semester begins. Students, faculty and staff of the School of Nursing are eligible to use an institutional license and are not required to purchase a personal copy. However, if you prefer to have your own licensed copy of SPSS that can be run anytime whether you are connected to the Hopkins network or not, IBM offers discounted versions of this software to students. Johns Hopkins University has partnered with Kivuto (OnTheHub) to facilitate easy purchasing of the educational product for personal use, following the steps outlined below. The SON has licensed IBM SPSS for 50 concurrent users. IMPORTANT NOTE FOR STUDENTS: It is highly recommended that you do NOT wait until the last minute to complete your assignments. Licenses are available on a first come first served basis. If all 50 licenses are in use, the fifty-first person will not be allowed to run the application and this will not be accepted by your instructor as an excuse for not completing an assignment on time.
- In order to launch the application the user must either be onsite or connected to the Hopkins network via the VPN.

- The SON Help Desk is always here to offer assistance, but we do ask that students attempt to install SPSS on their machines themselves using the instructions below and contact the Help Desk only if they run into problems.

How to install a School of Nursing Licensed version of SPSS
Install IBM SPSS Statistics for MacOS (Please note this may take a few minutes to complete)
- If offsite i.e. not on Hopkins campus launch JHPulse and establish a VPN connection
- Download installation files to computer from here
- Install IBM SPSS Statistics Client 25.0
- Install IBM SPSS Statistics - Essentials for Python = Yes
- Run the License Authorization Wizard
- Product Authorization = Concurrent user license
- License manager name = spssls.nursing.jhu.edu
...
- Download Fix files to computer from here
a. 25.0-IM-S25STATC-MAC-IF008.zip - Close SPSS
- Open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app)
- Navigate to the home directory in which SPSS Statistics 25
a. cd /Applications/IBM/SPSS/Statistics/25
b. sudo chmod +x IF_LAW_Python_25.sh
c. sudo ./IF_LAW_Python_25.sh - SPSS Statistics 25 License Authorization Wizard is now patched
*** Important***
If SPSS Statistics License Authorization Wizard and Python Utilities still can not be launched after patch, please rename the application name in Finder. For example, rename "Statistics License Authorization Wizard.app" to "Statistics License Authorization Wizard_1.app", and then rename it back. macOS 10.15 Catalina Finder will refresh the application and remove the restriction on this application.
